Golden Mile Redevelopment

A booming hub of industry in the 1950s, the Golden Mile became a symbol of affluence after World War II. Characterized by strip malls, low-slung boxes and parking lots, the Mile is a reminder of a time of prosperity, and the Golden Mile Plaza was even visited by Queen Elizabeth at its opening.

Today, the Golden Mile Shopping Centre is undergoing a sweeping revitalization for the new age. A mixed-use community is in the works. A total of 11 buildings ranging in height up to 32 storeys are proposed, and would consist of retail, public spaces, some commercial space, and high and mid-rise residential. Just 10 minutes from Terraces of Eglinton, all of the new shops, amazing dining, and services available at the Golden Mile will only be a short walk away.

The master plan envisioned by Giannone Petricone includes new open spaces including a formal park, public squares, and private amenity space. The addition of a new Loblaws as well as street-front retail is part of the plan to balance the existing big box stores in the Golden Mile. To be completed in 2021, the Crosstown LRT’s O’Connor, Pharmacy, Hakimi Lebovic, and Golden Mile stations are set to accommodate new residential density. The pedestrian focused design attempts to frame the site with a more urban street-level experience.
